The Wise Sabrina

Sabrina is a young 16-year-old girl who is not so much wise but has a big heart for the ones she loves: Aunt Hilda and Zelda, her cousin Ambrose, her boyfriend Harvey, her best friend Roz, and her friend Susie. In episode one, Sabrina is obligated by her Aunt Zelda to partake in a dark baptism on her 16th birthday which will grant her full witch powers. This ceremony takes place on a blood moon which only occurs every 66 years so this is a one and a lifetime opportunity to become a full witch since she is a half witch and half mortal. In this episode and episode 2, Sabrina ends up coming to her senses that partaking in the dark baptism does not mean full freedom to use her powers but instead is to submit to their Dark Lord Satan and serve him as he would like. In fact, she struggled with the doubts of her dark baptism and even the High Priest from the Church of Night was sent to cure her of her doubts much like one  would go see a priest from the Catholic church to cure any doubts but still, as she arrived at her dark baptism, she did not sign her Blood in the Book of the Beast, which would have pledged her allegiance to Satan. I guess you could say Sabrina was wise to not sell her way her freedom to her religion and actually be able to think for herself.

Moving on to episode 6, Susie’s uncle Jesse was supposedly mentally sick and had to be put to bed rest and even tied up because of his terrifying behavior. It turns out Susie’s uncle was possessed by Aphophis, a demon. In the academy, the school she attends to learn about witchcraft, the High Priest gives a lesson on exorcisms and of course, knowing that her friend’s uncle is possessed, she asks him if a witch is able to perform an exorcism to which he replies to her that it is a sin as established by witch law. Nevertheless, Sabrina is determined to take risks and push boundaries by wanting to meddle in mortal affairs and perform an exorcism to banish the demon inside Jesse. In this episode, Aunt Zelda calls Sabrina the wise witch because her niece supposedly knows what she is doing but she is also tired of her niece risking their reputation and coven for mortals. I guess one could say that Sabrina is cocky because she believes she can do anything if it’s for the ones that she loves and will stop at nothing to make sure that she “fixes” all the mortal affairs. The “wise woman” concept can also be seen in episode 9, when she brings back Harvey’s brother from the dead using a resurrection spell. Nevertheless, witch law prohibits necromancy and conjuration spells because it goes against the natural order. Still, Sabrina rebels against her Aunts, cousin, and witch law to help Harvey, the love of her life. It is sweet to know that Sabrina would do anything for the person she loves the most but in doing so she puts her kind at risk. History has told us people thought to be witches were burned at the stake and in reality, Aunt Zelda and Hilda are attempting to preserve their kind and that is why they both go against Sabrina’s wishes. Sabrina has a wonderful heart but her emotions tend to get her, her family, and coven into danger and the potential of being exposed. She is quite the “wise witch”.

Is Emma Watson Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

Actress Kiernan Shipka and Emma Watson headshot

KIERNAN SHIPKA is an American Actress that started out doing commercials, specifically two dozen, before making it to the big screen in the regular role on The Angriest Man in Suburbia. From there on, she moved to Los Angeles to take on as Sally in a small role on the hit sit-com, Mad Men, and as the director observed how well she played her character, she converted Sally into a recurring role in the series. In 2017, Sphipka was cast as young Sabrina in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. As well, as being a reboot of the original, this series is a witchy spin-off of the hit series “Riverdale”.

Similarities between Shipka and Watson:

I would like to start off by saying that the 2018 version captures more of a dark atmosphere as opposed to the comedic atmosphere of the 1996 version.  The series gives us visuals on covens, witch law, and the evils of demonic possession. Personally, I would choose the version that includes Shipka because I am driven towards series with ominous themes. But moving away from that, when I first saw Shipka walk into the scene in episode one, I had to look away and look back because my first thought was that it was Emma Watson on the screen, doing an American accent and casting spells. Little did I know, it was Kiernan Shipka, an American actress and not the British actress, Emma Watson. Still, they look very similar, both having a slim face, similar nose shape, and identical smile that can fool anyone into thinking they are each other or even long lost sisters.

Fans of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina did not stay quiet and took to Twitter to acknowledge the similarities between the two actresses. For example, @ruthsays posted on Twitter “Kiernan Shipka looks spookily similar to Emma Watson” and another user, @Jayfe86 said “Kiernan Shipka and Emma Watson…someone explain how they aren’t related”(Abidor). These tweets suggest that the gossip about the two actresses is not something only a select few are talking about but in fact, it is talked about quite a lot because everyone can see the similarities between the two actresses. I would consider them the same person…as a joke though :). Aside, the actresses’ have not made any comments on the twitter conversation about how they have similar features and perhaps they will someday or not say a word and leave people to talk about their similarities so they garter more media attention so they can promote future projects.

MPAA Ratings in the Industry

The film association is celebrating the 50th anniversary by releasing all of its ratings from past films and series. The MPAA started in 1968 and at the time rated films differently than we do today. A film considered R-rated at the time could actually be labeled PG-13 in the present day. On Vox, a 2006 documentary by the name of “This Film is Not Yet Rated” explains that there has been an over-emphasis on women’s sexual content and less emphasis on violence, hence ratings on violence being more lenient, labeling violence as PG-13 when in reality it should receive an R rating and vice versa (qtd. in Vox). Likewise, younger viewers could have been watching films that are too violent for their age group to watch which really is a neglect by the MPAA. The MPAA, at least from my observation, leaves violence out of the question. In the present day, mothers and fathers are allowing their kids to play violent video games from a young age and when it comes to nudity or sexual content, it is strictly prohibited. Sexuality is a human experience but killing another should not be. Why is it that we have things twisted? Well, I believe that times have change and that we have been placing strict labels on movies that include too much violence because of our means to protect the next generation even though it is not enforced by rule of law. At least, parents will have MPAA rating evidence to proof to their children that they should not watch these films or series. I think it’s important that we censor material to some viewers versus but that’s just me.

Disenchantment: Gender Roles

Disenchantment is a American animated Sci-fi comedy about a princess, her personal assistant, and her pet demon that go on adventures and cause mischievousness. Her father, King Zog, is ruler of Dreamland and first and foremost a father to Bean. He is like every traditional father with the belief that she needs to have her underneath his win at all times but sometimes he takes it to an extreme and ends up locking her up in her room. It makes sense that he would do this as a result of her mischievousness throughout the series but when she is trying to help her kingdom and her father, he tends to not see this and it drives him over the edge, locking her up in the tower. Watching this series, I observed the strictness of gender roles and what it means for a woman in her time. King Zog wants her daughter to get married but she sees this as a political tactic to maintain the royal family of Dreamland and this is due to the fact that he thinks that his daughter is not able to make her choices and should just be married off. On the contrary, Bean does not want to marry just anyone and she does not want to be tied to commitment at the moment and would prefer to have fun and live her life. So, she struggles to live up to her dad’s expectations but she also desires to be her own person. In episode 1 of season 1, Bean was forced to marry Prince Guysbert in order to secure a political alliance between her father’s kingdom and her will-be-husband father’s kingdom but she ran away from the palace at night to avoid getting married. She ended up going to a local tavern to play poker(Coate,”Disenchantment”). Bean, being the woman that she is in her time, is limited to the belief of growing up to be married at a young age and live a boring life while her husband takes care of the kingdom and she chose to run away from that. This shows us that Bean promotes the feminist ideology of our time in which a women is allowed to do as she pleases with her life and not confine herself because of what society says. Society is cruel. It tells women that they need to have a man in their life to function and once they have that man, they are subliminally labeled property of those men. For example, back in 2014, Ariana Grande was filmed saying that “I’m not Big Sean’s Ex or “Niall’s possible new girl”(Woodward, “Buzzfeed”), she is her independent person. That being said, she is shutting down this idea that a woman needs to have a man to be of value and when talking about Disenchantment, we also see this resistance and advocacy for women’s liberation. I think that Bean is a feminist icon that can reach audiences, even male audiences through comedy.

Haunted: Fact or Fiction?

Haunted is a paranormal docu-series that recounts the experiences of survivors of the paranormal. In the first episode, four survivors are sitting in a living room area telling their personal stories. Each of the their stories appear believable based on the details they provide but a docu-series does not automatically declare that the recounts are true. Plus, this is not a live feed of the stories but the filming of a series which means that multiple takes were done if something was not said right. Each of these individuals could have been given a script of some sort and allude to this ambience of terror and horror through fabricated ghost stories. With reality tv, it is very easy to get confused with what’s real and what’s not. The Kardashians have provided us with content that seems to good to be true and Kim Kardashian, herself, said that some aspects of their lives are hidden or toned down and it’s all for boosting ratings. How are we to know that some aspects of this show maybe exaggerated or entirely false. A professor and part-tome ghost hunter, Vic Tandy, wanted to debunk the ghost experiences in the cellar at Coventry University in England and he did he set out to investigate and discovered “the fear frequency. By measuring infrasound levels, he determined that high frequencies can cause people to see optical illusions, get chills, feel anxious, and other effects.”(Insider). This being said, Jason Hawkins from the first episode could have been experiencing the fear frequency and so could have his parents which caused hallucinations and maybe even then, the stories about his parents experiencing things themselves could have been false. Overall, I’m not saying that these experiences are exaggerated or fake but it there can be some sort of scientific explanation for these occurrences. Now, it is up to you, the audience to decide whether you believe these accounts or not!

Foreshadowing Death

In episode 9 of A Haunting of Hill House, Mrs. Crain has a migraine while in her reading room that she tends by going downstairs for a glass of water. Next, she went back up stairs to her room and once she opened the door, she saw a Morgue, and her twin children as adults, Nellie on the table and Luke on the floor dead. At first, she didn’t realize that these were her children but with a closer look and her sensitivity to the paranormal, she knew those were her twins. Unfortunately, there she understood that her “dream” was alluding to her children’s death. And from there she vowed to always protect her littles ones, even if it came to the point in which she would keep them safe from the house by attempting to poison them, as seen in the same episode. Eerily, in episode 1, Shirley Crain had been done placing make up on her late sister in prep for her funeral and her body is laying down on the same table and with the same hair and make-up just as experienced by their late mother. As she was about to turn off the lights, she saw her mother laying on the table next to Nellie’s just like her mother saw her youngest daughter laying down the table of a morgue. Therefore, Olivia became more protective of her kids and in a specific dream she had one night, Poppy Hill, of the house’s former residents appeared to her and asked her if she would do anything to protect her kids from the pain and suffering of the outside world to which she said yes. Therefore, Mrs. Crain could not be hallucinating because in the kids’ adult life, Nellie dies. In fact, the dreams she had about Poppy Hill and the old lady, one of the house’s former residents, were real. She was even convinced by Poppy that she needed to give herself to the house and her children to keep them safe from the outside world but the ghost really wanted to increase the house’s residents. Thus, she took her children and Mrs. Dudley’s child into the red room to drink tea that was poisoned so that she’d end “their suffering and her suffering from the outside world”. In fact, the house was the one that made them suffer. Fortunately, her husband came into the red room and saved their children but Mrs. Crain hurt her head by being pushed against the wall by her husband while trying to escape with the children. She was then tempted by Poppy to end her life which she did by falling to her death from the spiral staircase. Here, it can be understood that Mrs. Crain foresaw her death in her children’s death because as a mother, she understood that she would do anything for her kids, even if it meant that she had to pass away. She attempted to take the twins with her to the spirit world but learning that her husband had taken them away, she chose to end her own suffering and become a part of the house.

AHOHH Cast: Curiosity of the Unknown

In a interview with Kevin McCarthy from FOX 5, from the cast of A Haunting of Hill House, Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reasar and Oliver Jackson-Cohen were asked if they had any real life experiences, whether ghost encounters or any nightmares. Michiel spoke first saying that he always had night terrors about being kidnapped by a witch and that they would always be reoccurring, and Elizabeth spoke up and said that she also had night terrors about being kidnapped, just not specifically by a witch. Oliver had a fear about being possessed. From what we know, these nightmares come from a fear of the unknown and that fear of the unknown is what sparks curiosity inside of us. These fears of nightmares, unconsciously, drew these actors after all these years to take on the role of the Crains and even other roles in horror series and movies. Ultimately, partaking in these works fuel actors or actresses’ curiosities of the unknown, just as experienced in their dreams. As written in the article, 5 Reasons We Enjoy Being Scared,”Our world is easier to engage with when things make sense to us; and so, some may choose to engage further with ‘the unknown’ in order to better make sense of the situation”(Psychology Today). That being said, the cast experienced something that they can not make a meaning out of and although they may not consciously state that they would like to gain more of an understanding, unconsciously they would like to understand and thats why a series like this one and horror films help fill that void.

Opinion: The Death of Mrs. Crain

Episode one begins with the Crain Family living at the Hill House, also known as the most haunted house in America. In the series, four siblings have encountered many experiences during your childhood which can not be explained and with no luck, they have a mother and a father that do not believe what they are experiencing. In a particular scene in episode 3, Carla Gugino, who plays the role of the mother, Olivia Crain, has migraines and these migraines allow her to see and sense energies about people, objects, and certain situations. Maybe this ability has a certain connection to her own death. During episode one, Mr. Crain awakes his children to tell him that they need to leave the house and never look back and takes his three girls, Shirley, Theodora, Nell and his one boy, Luke, to his station wagon while he looks for this other son, Steve. When he finally returns with Steve, all of the children turn to him to ask about their mom to which he does not answer and drives away. Steven Crain, the eldest son, says that he sees their mom looking down from the window on the second floor and his father responds by saying to not look at her because that is not their mother. Ultimately, he never told his children what had happened to their mom and later on in life, when he did, he told them that their mom was mentally ill and that she had passed away without clarifying any details. But, this raises a false flag! Mr.Cain does not believe the paranormal encounters that his children had experienced but all of a sudden one night he tells Luke, while waiting to take him to the car, that he is afraid of the house and then when they get the car tell his children they have to go without bringing their mother along with them? That to me sounds a little too fishy and the dad should positively be labeled as a suspect. And in episode 1, it is made known that, as adults, Nell Cain died under mysterious circumstances. Consequently, that night, Nell called her father and asked if he was okay to which the change of scene shows Nell parked in front of her childhood home. Next, and Older Mr. Crain gets up from his bed and goes to visit his daughter which is then presumed dead by her father but will not disclose the information surrounding her death to his other children. This is the second time he does this to his family and without any explanation. It seems more like we have a murder mystery in front of us than just mere ghost stories. Yes, the Hill House was in fact haunted but maybe there was something more dark at the time, maybe the stresses surrounding their new home mixed in with the hauntings caused a younger Mr. Crain to become mentally ill and murder his wife. This is just something we will have to see as the show goes on!
